On Friday, as a result of a police raid on In the Manhattan room, called the “Broadway Club,” 13 people were arrested (club employees exclusively) and 56,000$ were confiscated. Prior to this incident, in May, police raids were carried out on two poker clubs, arresting 39 people and confiscating 100,000$. Officials, explaining the incident, referred to the increase in the number of illegal poker clubs that are emerging due to the popularity of the game.

Here's what one of the room's staff members says: The club consists of a large room with six tables and a glazed private room for high stakes or private games. Drinking alcohol in the club is prohibited. Players can buy chips from the cashier, who sits in a small room with a window.

Some games, which were interrupted by a police raid, were qualifiers for the higher stakes tournament.

Prosecutors said it was not illegal to play poker for money in New York State, USA. The owners of the poker club argued that they simply rent space to the players and do not profit from the bets. Thus, they say, the club resembles billiard rooms. The police said that even the rentals are illegal and the club is promoting gambling.
